Basically, the brain produces a phenomenon that results in low-frequency pulsations in the amplitude (volume) and sound localization of a perceived sound when two tones at slightly different frequencies are presented separately, one to each of a person’s ears, using stereo headphones.  A beating tone will be perceived, as if the two tones mixed naturally, out of the brain. The frequencies of the tones must be below 1,000 hertz for the beating to be noticeable. The difference between the two frequencies must be small (less than or equal to 30 Hz) for the effect to occur; otherwise, the two tones will be heard separately, and no beat will be perceived.
The functional role of neural oscillations is still not fully understood;[6] however they have been shown to correlate with emotional responses, motor control, and a number of cognitive functions including information transfer, perception, and memory.[7][8][9] Specifically, neural oscillations, in particular theta activity, are extensively linked to memory function, and coupling between theta and gamma activity is considered to be vital for memory functions, including episodic memory.[10][11][12]

Your brain operates at certain levels of activity – the normal waking, active Beta, the meditative Alpha, the asleep-and-dreaming or deep meditative Theta, and the deep sleep/unconscious Delta. Beta is characterized by one thing we all want to get away from – stress.But that brainwave state has its place. It’s the action mode, and that’s the way it should be! If we’re not alert when we’re awake, bad things can happen, right?

They are a useful and effective tool that allow you a structured means in which to entrain your brain into a desired, new brainwave state using an intended set frequency range of the audio track. Frequency ranges for desired sleep, recovery and deep meditation states to different/higher frequency ranges for performance “flow-states” and high-level focus and calculation.
So discovering the field of Brainwave Entrainment is very exciting and promising. However intriguing, there are a few things that make me a bit sceptical towards it. F.i. I’m not too keen on having to rely on any external stimuli, as (regular) meditation is one of the very few things where you are absolutely independent from anything external to make a change within, which to me makes it so special.
Quick example: Brainwave readings (with an EEG machine) have shown that brainwaves of 2Hz occur when an individual is asleep. Scientists can create special audio recordings, which contain an encoded 2Hz frequency. While listening to such audio, the brain naturally follows (entrains) toward that 2Hz frequency, lowering its brainwave patterns. That's "brainwave entrainment." The net result is that when listening to such an audio recording, you (the listener) will naturally fall asleep.

I have discussed these findings with my sister, and two nice which are professionals in the fields of psychology, and medicine respectively (my sister and older nice have vast experience on the psychology arena, and my younger nice is a pediatrician), and they all agree this therapy can be of a great benefit applied in conjunction with traditional self-improvement programs.
Brainwave entrainment can enhance physical, emotional and mental healing. As a matter of fact, medical experts make use of different frequencies to assist patients who suffer from depression, attention deficit disorders, alcoholism, autism, poor self esteem as well as drug addiction. You could also make use of brainwave frequencies to alleviate migraines and headaches.
If the further development of consciousness and awareness is your ultimate goal, there really is no substitute for actual meditation, of which many techniques are the result of thousands of years of human endeavor and accumulated knowledge and experience. My voice is relaxing and relaxation is pleasurable. These mental directives soothingly lull your conscious mind into ending its internal dialogue. It is the conscious mind that does ALL of the worrying, nagging, second-guessing and basically all of the incessant mental chatter and constant inner dialogue that can keep us trapped by our own view of reality, whether these views are good for us or not.

My personal experience of this was that it could get very harrowing; at times, I would literally be gritting my teeth and contracting my ribs while I was in meditation, because it was pushing me so hard. I began to ask, “Is it necessary to push this hard in such a static way and create overwhelm over such prolonged periods in order to propel spiritual evolution?”


I'll give you a clue... How do you feel about money? Do you think you'll be rich, or do you worry about bills? Or... what do you think of yourself? Are you worthy of an awesome relationship, or will you just settle for the first person who comes along? Do you have your dream job or do you just do what you can to get by? Do you live life on your terms, or struggle desperately not to be noticed?
The mechanism for this is that when your eyes or ears are exposed to a particular frequency of pulses or beats, the thalamus first distributes this information to the entire brain, including the visual and cerebral cortex where neural activity begins to synchronize to the incoming frequency, producing hemispheric synchronization and a balance of brainwave activity across the brain.

To summarize all this, we can see that the type of product you choose plays an important role in answering that question – “Can brainwave entrainment damage my brain?” My personal advice as a long-term user of the technology is to Be selective about what brainwave entrainment audios you download from the internet, and make sure to follow the instructions!

Ultimately the only way to know if this is right for you, or if it works for you is to test it. A good audio creator should be willing to let you give their audios a test drive to see if it’s right for you. When you test this type of technology, one that is largely left to subjective experience, I would highly recommend you listen to the same audio daily for a full week or two, taking one day off per week. There are many different experiences that can be had with this type of technology, including not noticing it doing anything at all. Having at least 5-10 experiences with it will give you a reliable way to gage whether or not this is going to work for you.

Gray Walter carried out a series of experiments in the late forties and fifties in which he used an electronic stroboscopic device in combination with EEG equipment to send rhythmic light flashes into the eyes of the subjects at frequencies ranging from ten to twenty five flashes per second. I’m sorry to hear you’re having these troubles. First off, I disagree with whoever told you it was a good idea to listen to 6 subliminals a day. I suppose I would need more context to better understand. Are these binaural beats or brainwave entrainment audios? If so you are definitely listening too much, and can harm yourself (just as the article mentions above from over-doing it). Even if they are not brainwave entrainment audios, I cannot imagine it is effective or the best idea to listen to so much so often. I would pick one subject that correlates to the most important goal for you and stick with it until you have achieved it. Remember to steer clear of that tempting idea of getting “all that you want for nothing”. Even subliminals are a tool. You still have to use the tool to do the work.

Monaural beats have similarities to binaural beats, but the two separate frequencies are delivered through a pulse pattern and mixed before they reach the listeners ears, resulting in the advantage of being audible without stereo headphones. Depression: Currently there is no substantial evidence to support the idea that brainwave entrainment treats depression in adults. There is a certain point where the promised benefits of brainwave entrainment become more esoteric, and based on internal, subjective experience of oneself.  A few examples would be that listening to brainwave entrainment on a regular basis helps to increase one’s self-awareness, or that it increases mental “sharpness”, or helps to heal emotional trauma and increase your tolerance of stress and negative emotion.

In 1984 medical researcher Dr. Gene W. Brockopp published a paper making several conclusions of audio and visual entrainment (AVE). Such conclusions were that hemispheric synchronization caused by AVE is related to increased intellectual functioning, practiced use of AVE overtime leads to a cumulative effect, and AVE may result in the recovery of early childhood experiences.

I’ve been asked for help with autism a number of times over the years, so it’s something that I’ve often looked into and tried to find new information about. Unfortunately, I’ve yet to find any specific research relating to it and using the type of brainwave entrainment tones I use. There are a number of opinions and claims out here, but I’ve often found them to be conflicting. While some are recommending higher frequency gamma waves, others are recommending lower frequency alpha and theta waves while meditating.
Heart rate variability: A new study suggests that among those with low HRV (heart-rate variability), brainwave entrainment can increase HRV. Researchers studied individuals ages 20 to 70 and administered alpha brain stimulation. The alpha wave stimulation resulted in greater heart-rate variability. Since a low HRV is associated with early mortality and poor psychological and physical health, efforts made to increase it should be regarded as beneficial.
Brainwave entrainment is a colloquialism for such 'neural entrainment', which is a term used to denote the way in which the aggregate frequency of oscillations produced by the synchronous electrical activity in ensembles of cortical neurons can adjust to synchronize with the periodic vibration of an external stimuli, such as a sustained acoustic frequency perceived as pitch, a regularly repeating pattern of intermittent sounds, perceived as rhythm, or of a regularly rhythmically intermittent flashing light.
